Образ "Малюка Боні" в англійській сатиричній гравюрі межі ХVІІІ–ХІХ століть з фондів Харківського художнього музею

Abstract

У статті досліджено колекцію англійської антинаполеонівської сатиричної графіки кін. XVIII – поч. XIX ст. з фондів Харківського художнього музею. Охарактеризовано індивідуальні особливості творчого почерку відомих англійських карикатуристів, підкреслено прямий зв’язок сюжетів карикатур з політичною ситуацією того часу. Більшість англійських карикатур межі XVIII–XIX ст. пов’язано з ім’ям Наполеона Бонапарта, який і був головним героєм переважної кількості сатиричних аркушів.

В статье исследовано коллекцию английской антинаполеоновской сатирической графики кон. XVIII – нач. XIX вв. из фондов Харьковского художественного музея. Охарактеризовано индивидуальные особенности творческого почерка известных английских карикатуристов; подчеркнуто прямую связь сюжетов карикатур с политической ситуацией того времени. Большинство английских карикатур рубежа XVIII–XIX вв. связано с именем Наполеона Бонапарта, который и был главным героем подавляющего числа сатирических листов.

The paper studies the collection of British anti-Napoleonic satirical graphics of the late eighteenth early, nineteenth centuries from the funds of the Kharkіv Art Museum. It identifies the individual characteristics of the artistic style of famous British cartoonists, whilst also highlighting the direct link between the themes and the political situation of the time. Satirical graphics of the late eighteenth, early nineteenth century are a distinctive and colorful phenomenon of British art and culture. During this time, the absence of censorship and freedom of the press in England created favorable conditions for the development of political cartoons in contrast to continental Europe. Caricature broadsheets were published on a daily basis for popular consumption in their hundreds and thousands. Created by outstanding masters of this genre such as James Gillray, George Cruikshank, William Elms, Charles Williams, these satirical sheets appeared instantaneously, as troublesome news reached the shores of Albion. These cartoons were a powerful political tool – not only did they amuse and entertain, they annoyed, thrilled and had great influence on public opinion. Not one historical era has been reflected so well in caricatures, as that of Napoleon Bonaparte. He was the protagonist of the overwhelming majority of British cartoons at the turn of the nineteenth century. The British created a caricature of Napoleon as “Little Boney”. In the Napoleonic era British cartoonists fulfilled an important social mandate, by creating an image of Napoleon which caused the viewer not only disgust but also disdain. During these years, the caricatures of Napoleon brought together the people of Europe, creating a new international language which facilitated the exchange of opinions on the person on everyone’s mind – Napoleon Bonaparte. It is the British cartoonists of this era, who had the most profound influence on foreign artists and made the greatest contribution to the forming principles and guiding rules of the genre of political caricatures as we know it today.
