This thesis examines the main causes of the decline of the Byzantine Empire in the post-Latin period, that is, following the restoration of Byzantine statehood in 1261 after the fall of the Latin Empire. It analyses the complex of internal and external factors that led to the gradual weakening of the empire and its final collapse in 1453. Particular attention is paid to political instability, dynastic conflicts, economic crises, the weakening of the military system, dependence on foreign powers, and the growing threat from the Ottoman Turks. This study describes the state of Byzantium following the restoration of the Palaiologos dynasty, identifies the characteristics of the emperors’ domestic policies in the 13th–15th centuries, and examines the role of socio-economic contradictions in the weakening of the state. Considerable attention is devoted to analysing the empire’s foreign policy situation, in particular its relations with Western European states, Slavic countries and the Ottoman Empire. It is demonstrated that the decline of the Byzantine Empire was the result not of a single cause, but of a combination of interrelated factors which, in the context of a prolonged crisis, undermined its political, economic and military power. |
