The article is devoted to the study of notes as a dominant element of the paratextual plane. The functionality of the mentioned phenomenon, its role and tasks have been studied. The ontological status of aligned text elements is considered, taking into account the long tradition of creating additional forms that appear in the translated version of a work in order to compensate for certain segments of texts that are difficult to convey by means of a target language due to the lack of equivalents or the difficulty of reading, based on the cultural and social differences between the space, fixed in the text, and realities in which the recipient lives. The purpose of the article is to identify the trending prerequisites and stages of the appearance of notes. The task of the research is formulated as follows: 1) to outline the ontological status of notes; 2) to characterize the role of translation interventions; 3) to describe the stages of creating paratextual elements. The relevance of the study lies in the analysis of the status of notes as modus elements of a text, which are in the focus of foreign modern translation studies discourse. As a result of the study, the theoretical boundaries between the peritext and the epitext as parts of a two-component paratext structure have been outlined, based on the generally accepted classification of French literary critic Gerard Genette. The repertoire of notes has been presented and their importance for the reception of a text, which expands the semantic field of a work, has been proved. Notes are highlighted as separate full-fledged forms of intertextual connections that have a genre nature. The main types of translation interventions have been clarified, and their features have been characterized. On the basis of various types of textual interaction, hypothetical stages of the appearance of notes have been distinguished, which include the author stage, the first-order editorial stage, the first-order reader stage, the translation stage, the second- order editorial stage, and the second-order reader stage. The nature of a work is considered as a complex system, which is a genre symbiosis, where each paratextual segment (preface, afterword, notes, etc.) is aimed at semantic unity. Emphasis is placed on the fact that all components are meaningfully connected with each other and are parts of the structural organization of a work, and therefore are components of the whole.
