Abstract: The article examines the history of the development of translation in France in terms of the linguistic culture of the reader and the translator. For each of the 4 stages in the history of literary translation, the author analyzes the goals and principles of working with a foreign text, as well as the reaction of readers to translation. Trends and principles in translation at each stage are considered. Today, the translation practice in France, as well as around the world, is heavily influenced by theories and models of machine translation and computer translation programs. Modern researchers distinguish at least six theoretical approaches to translation that are developing: sociological, communicative, hermeneutic, linguistic, literary, semiotic.
