| Abstract: | The article establishes specifics of the free indirect discourse by means of analyzing narrative techniques in the works by Jane Austen such as «Pride and Prejudice» and «Emma», and in the novel «To the Lighthouse» by Virginia Woolf. It studies the ways of conveying thoughts and words of the characters and the narrator’s role in it. |
