dc.description.abstract | The article deals with the functional peculiarities of indirect speech acts in Patrick White’s discourse. Indirect utterances are defined as effective means of verbal cooperation in characters’ speech. The speaker realizes indirect speech effect on the recipient by means of indirect utterances in Patrick White’s discourse. Indirect speech effect is verbal or non-verbal reaction of a character on the indirect speech act in communicative situation. The analysis of characters’ speech in Patrick White novels shows that indirect utterances make positive and negative emotional speech effect on the recipient. In addition to this, the evaluative issue of indirect speech acts accounts for its effective functionality in Patrick White’s novels. The speakers use indirect utterances to evaluate the recipient’s actions, feelings, behavior, character, skills and things in general. | uk_UA |
