Постаті менторів в романі Томаса Манна «Зачарована гора»

Abstract

У статті розглядається роман Томаса Манна «Зачарована гора», який класифікується як філософський, інтелектуальний роман, а також, констатується його близькість до пригодницького роману та традиції німецького роману виховання, оскільки він презентує надзвичайно зворушливу, емоційно й інтелектуально наповнену картину процесу становлення особистості центрального протагоніста. Авторка статті акцентує увагу на аналізі постатей наставників-менторів, котрі виступають представниками різних ідеологічних доктрин і відіграють визначальну роль в еволюції характеру головного героя.

In this article is investigated the novel «The Magic Mountain» by Thomas Mann witch is a monumental work of erudition and irony and intellectual ferment. It is also a classic example of the German Bildungsroman - a novel of education or it also be called a “novel of formation.” It masterfully depicts a very emotional and intellectual picture of the process of formation of the main protagonist - Hans Castorp. In an isolated atmosphere of a mountain sanatorium Berghof in Davos, the main character happens to be placed right in the center of intellectual arguments, spiritual search, and self-discovery. He studies a lot of science and professional literature, psychology, chemistry, physics while also trying to fully understand the secrets of micro- and macro- space and the laws of the atom. Localization of the space becomes a pushing force in the rebirth of the main character as his 7 years long stay “on the mountain” convinces us in the unavoidable changes in his inner world and testifies the consistency and logical preconditioning in forming a new worldview. Renewal of the structure of genre happens also on the level of the system of characters since education of the main character happens under the influence of a few mentors who are representatives of opposite ideological systems. In particular, a humanitarian Lodovico Settembrini speaks in support of enlightenment and rational improvement of the humankind while Leo Nafta, a religious fundamentalist, fanatic, and an apologist of the communist utopia, favors terror and dictatorship of the working class. Once Hans Castorp reaches intellectual and spiritual maturity, it lets him find independent position and create a certain critical distance to objectively evaluate certain things and make conclusions on his own.
