Українськомовна періодика української діаспори США у збереженні національної ідентичності (1991-2017 рр.)

Abstract

У дисертації досліджено й охарактеризовано роль українськомовної періодики діаспори США у збереженні національної ідентичності (1991– 2017 рр.). З’ясовано функціонування громадських організацій, досліджено націєтворчі аспекти дотримання традицій, культу сім’ї, духовну роль української церкви, проаналізовано культурну самопрезентацію, мовноцентричність публікацій і виховний потенціал українознавчих шкіл США. Простежено діяльність української діаспори США щодо здобуття незалежності України, лобіювання національних інтересів історичної батьківщини, питання соціально- економічного співробітництва. Охарактеризовано внесок українськомовної періодики діаспори США у збереженні національної пам’яті, окреслено український культурний дискурс.

В диссертации исследована и охарактеризована роль украиноязычной периодики диаспоры США в сохранении национальной идентичности (1991– 2017 гг.). Выяснено функционирование общественных организаций, нациетворческие аспекты соблюдения традиций, культа семьи, духовная роль украинской церкви, проанализирована культурная самопрезентация, языкоцентричность публикаций и воспитательный потенциал украинских школ США. Прослежена деятельность украинской диаспоры США в обретении независимости Украины, лоббировании интересов исторической родины, вопросы социально-экономического сотрудничества. Охарактеризован вклад украиноязычной периодики украинской диаспоры США в сохранении национальной памяти, обозначен украинский культурный дискурс.

The role of Ukrainian-language periodicals of the USA Ukrainian Diaspora in the national identity preservation (1991–2017) is comprehensively researched and thoroughly investigated in the thesis. It has been proved that such main attributes that play an important role in the national identity preservation, are: common customs and traditions, language, religion, culture, historical memory, the national system of education, awareness of one’s personal engagement with the historical homeland’s destiny. It has been emphasized that public associations and Diaspora institutions still remain an effective factor of the Ukrainian Diaspora community’s national selfdetermination and self-organization and the means of both, communication between emigrants and their native land and distinctive national culture, education and science preservation. The nation-formation and religious role of Ukrainian religious organizations as the first form of the Ukrainian Diaspora’s organized life in the USA has been determined. The information about the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) in the United States turned out to be thematically wide and numerous. It has been established that very few journalistic materials of the studied Ukrainian-language periodicals of the Ukrainian Diaspora in the USA present the activities of Ukrainian Baptist and Evangelists in the context and their cooperation with the UOC and the UGCC in the USA. Based on the analysis of the feature material in the Ukrainian Diaspora’s Ukrainian-language periodicals, the nation-formation aspects of traditions observation as the form of social continuity have been investigated. The role of the cult of the family as one of the constants of the national identity preservation has been shown and the important features of community life in this context have been highlighted. The communicative potential of Ukrainian-language periodicals of the Ukrainian Diaspora in the USA in the context of differentiation of its cultural self-presentation has been analyzed. The language-centricity of publications in Ukrainian-language periodicals of the Ukrainian Diaspora in the context of identity preservation has been determined. It has been stated that Ukrainian schooling remains one of the main topics of the Ukrainian-language periodicals of the USA. The support of Ukrainian schools’ activity in the USA by various organizations, foundations, public and private institutions, aimed at the Ukrainian language development and children’s upbringing has been is indicated. The activity of Ukrainian-language periodicals of the Ukrainian Diaspora in the USA has been determined since 1991 as well as its role in restoring Ukraine's independence and supporting its democratization. According to the materials of the Ukrainian-language periodicals of the Ukrainian Diaspora in the USA the issues of social and economic cooperation with Ukraine as one of the factors of Ukrainian self-identification and the issues of providing humanitarian assistance have been singled out. The contribution of the Ukrainian-language periodicals of the USA Ukrainian Diaspora to preserving national memory (celebrating the Official Day of Heroes, the Remembrance Day, the National Unity Day, the November Uprising, the Shevchenko’s days, honoring Ukrainian historic figures, commemorating the Holodomor victims and the Chernobyl disaster) is highlighted. The role of university education for Ukrainian state-building has been emphasized and Ukrainian cultural discourse in Ukrainian-language periodicals of the Ukrainian Diaspora as a factor for the preservation of national identity has been outlined.
